How to actually sell something on craigslist

  1. Include multiple - well lit - pictures of the item from various zoom levels and perspectives. a

  2. Detail the type, model, measurements, and any other relevant details about the item (you can find this information in product pages from the manufacturer or at online retailers). b

    Bad: Macbook Air Charger.
Good: Apple Macbook Air 45W MagSafe Charger (w/ "L" style connector). Compatible with 11 or 13 inch MacBook Airs made in Late 2010 or Mid 2011.

  3. Write an objective evaluation of the condition of the item. Avoid the temptation to wax poetic about all the very legitimate reasons you have for getting rid of something. c Instead of talking about your personal life, write a succinct, honest write up about the pros and cons of your item.

Bad: "I'm getting rid of the couch because I just got married and we only need one."
Good: "Couch was lightly used and cushions are still firm. Slight discoloration on the top back from sunlight."

  4. Put your availability (when people can pick up the item) and your preferred method of contact (e-mail or phone) in the post.

    Bad: Call me.
Good: Available for pick-up M/W/F between 5-8pm or Sat 10am-8pm. Please call with any questions or to schedule pick-up.

  5. Don't put it for free. If you're just trying to get rid of it, instead try a low - but reasonable - price. When the person shows up, you can always pleasantly surprise them by refusing the cash. d

    Bad: "Free while it lasts."
    Good: "$15"
